Terminologies for Reproducible Research
نویسنده
چکیده
Reproducible research—by its many names—has come to be regarded as a key concern across disciplines and stakeholder groups. Funding agencies and journals, professional societies and even mass media are paying attention, often focusing on the so-called “crisis” of reproducibility. One big problem keeps coming up among those seeking to tackle the issue: different groups are using terminologies in utter contradiction with each other. In July 2017, over a dozen participants joined the Workshop on Reproducibility Taxonomies for Computing and Computational Science at the National Science Foundation, to appraise the variety of terminologies. My presentation at that event (Barba, 2017) condensed a catalog of uses of the recurrent terms reproduce and replicate, often meaning different things but sometimes interchangeable.

Reproducibility of interpreting "and" and "or" in terminology systems
High quality terminologies are a fundamental requirement in a range of health care applications. To ensure high quality terminologies we should reflect about the understandability, reproducibility and utility criteria within a terminology. This paper describes efforts to improve the understandability of SNOMED. We describe the problem related to the grammatical conjunctions "and" and "or" and h...
متن کاملIn defense of the Desiderata
A 1998 paper that delineated desirable characteristics, or desiderata for controlled medical terminologies attempted to summarize emerging consensus regarding structural issues of such terminologies. Among the Desiderata was a call for terminologies to be "concept oriented." Since then, research has trended toward the extension of terminologies into ontologies. A paper by Smith, entitled "From ...

The Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) has been promoting structured radiology reports by creating "best practices" reporting templates. The RSNA Reporting Template Library has been developed with the goal of integrating reusable knowledge into the clinical reporting process, which has intentionally incorporated standardized biomedical terminologies to reduce communication errors caus...
متن کاملTerminology Based Visualization of Interfaces in Interdisciplinary Research Networks
Interdisciplinary collaboration between researchers from different fields is often hampered by different wordings and terminologies as well as the varying utilization of similar concepts. Empirical research has shown that a visualization of thematic interfaces between the researchers in a Cluster of Excellence is a possible approach to support scientific collaboration processes. As one possible...
متن کاملTerminologies as a Neglected Part of Research Data: Making Supplementary Research Data Available through the GFBio Terminology Service
In many research projects, much more data are created than made publicly available. Keeping research data deliberately closed or publishing only selected subsections of the gathered data are unfortunately common practices in academia. Fortunately, such problems have been getting more and more attention in the past years. However, another issue that is still often overlooked concerns research da...
